YMCA Y Haven is a temporary housing and drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Cleveland, Ohio. They treat men and women aged 21 and over with Substance Abuse Disorder (SUD), who are exiting incarceration, do not have housing, or are living with Opioid Use Disorder. It's a residential setting with modern amenities and furnished suites, with two to three people in a room.
Y Haven offers clients stability and treatment to help them reintegrate into society. Their whole person approach helps clients develop the skills they need to maintain a sober and stable life once treatment ends.
Recovery is more likely when clients have a safe living environment. Y Haven clients enjoy a fully furnished residence while receiving 24 hour support from onsite staff. Any medical treatment is provided by local care providers partnered with Y Haven.
Clients receive therapy individually and in groups, wherein they explore their triggers and learn healthy coping mechanisms they can use every day to maintain sobriety. Group therapy allows clients to share and learn from one another’s experiences and practice social skills.
Another goal of Y Haven’s residential program is to help clients develop vocational skills that allow them to earn and hold jobs so that they’ll exit the program with greater stability. Additionally, the care team assists with case management, medication management, and finding permanent housing.
Clients leaving the program can receive up to six months of ongoing support from Y Haven. Aftercare focuses on connecting clients with support and medical resources and setting long term goals.
All YMCA programs aim to serve their communities. Y Haven works with the Cleveland Public Theater in a program that allows clients to create stage performances based on their life experiences. These shows are impactful experiences for clients that help bring attention to the growing issue of homelessness and substance abuse in the community.
Y-Haven is supported by many partners, including the ADAMHS Board of Cuyahoga County, the Cuyahoga County Office of Re-Entry, and the U.S. Veterans Administration.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.
Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.
Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.
In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.
Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.
