About this Facility

Valley HealthCare System, formerly known as the New Beginnings Program, provides services to people who have been diagnosed with mental illnesses, addictions, and intellectual or developmental disabilities in Fairmont, West Virginia. Their services range from early intervention to long-term support post treatment.

Valley HealthCare System offers crisis intervention services, short-term residential care, and long-term residential care.

The crisis services at Valley Health Care System include mental hygiene petitions, a crisis hotline, volunteer placement, and short-term residential care. The purpose of crisis intervention services is to offer a multidimensional response to mental health or substance use emergencies.

The short-term residential care program at Valley Health Care System provides a safe place for clients to receive help if their psychiatric symptoms have escalated. Signs of a crisis episode include risky or out of control behavior, or acute depression that leads to extreme withdrawal or talk of suicide. This programming helps stabilize individuals who need immediate help. It also supports those who are in the early stages of drug or alcohol withdrawal and provides medically supervised detox for those in need. Upon completing the detox, psychiatric exams, ongoing medication management, and individual and group therapy are offered. The length of treatment will be determined by each person’s treatment plan. The average length of stay for detox is three to seven days. If a mental health crisis has taken place, three days is the minimum, with the potential of staying over a month.

The long-term treatment plan with Valley Health Care System is for individuals who need a longer stay than what the short-term residential care program can provide them. The long-term program is located in Fairmont but is available to those who want to attend and who are capable of undergoing long-term treatment.

Individual therapy creates the space to explore the psychological challenges associated with addiction. With the help of a professional, individuals are given the space and direction to talk about and process their emotions. Often this includes unresolved trauma, anger, depression, anxiety, and the need for more control or autonomy in life.

Group therapy involves treatment through the process of connecting in a group setting to discuss and work through mental, emotional, and physical issues. There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more.

Treatment

Alcoholism

When a person struggles with alcoholism, they have become dependent on alcohol and require treatment to overcome the addiction. Alcohol rehab in West Virginia teaches you new coping skills and helps you process emotional issues related to drinking. Medications may also be provided to help control the alcohol addiction and maintain sobriety.

Drug Addiction

Drug addiction causes psychological and physical damage through repeated and uncontrollable use of substances. Drug rehab in West Virginia focuses on providing a full continuum of care, from detox to aftercare, and treatment can take place in outpatient or inpatient settings, based on your needs.

Dual Diagnosis

In West Virginia, dual-diagnosis addiction treatment programs provide specialized care for individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health conditions. These programs offer a full continuum of care, including detox, outpatient, inpatient, intensive outpatient, and partial hospitalization options. Treatment includes individual and group therapy, medication management, experiential therapy, skills training, and relational counseling.

Mental Health and Substance Abuse

If you're in West Virginia and in need of help for both mental health and substance abuse, dual-diagnosis rehabs offer comprehensive care designed to meet your specific needs. These rehab programs combine evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy to reframe unhelpful patterns, dialectical behavior therapy to improve emotional regulation, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing to overcome trauma. This trauma-informed approach addresses both disorders and promotes mental health and well-being.

Opioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Level of Care

Outpatient

Outpatient rehabs support clients’ long-term recovery through a robust continuum of care aligned with clients’ evolving needs. Many programs feature transitional services for clients stepping down from intensive inpatient care. Ambulatory medical detox is also available in some outpatient facilities for clients at low risk for withdrawal complications. Outpatient treatment centers typically encompass multiple levels of care, including partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), supportive housing, and standard outpatient programming.

Aftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Intensive Outpatient

Clients in addiction recovery often transition from inpatient rehab to intensive outpatient programs (IOP) to promote their successful reintegration into their home, workplace, and community. These programs provide high-level support for clients in early recovery and those at an increased relapse risk, offering between nine and 20 hours of treatment per week on average. Intensive outpatient treatment typically involves a range of therapeutic approaches, including psychotherapy, recovery education, holistic treatments, such as acupuncture, and medication assisted treatment (MAT) for alcohol and/or opioid dependency.

Inpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements. Their Crisis Residential Unit is designed to provide support to those that are experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms. They are dedicated to working with the patient to stabilize the situation and help them return to their home with follow-up care

Clinical Services

Assertive Community Treatment

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) is a structured way of helping those with major mental illnesses and/or substance abuse by bringing services directly to the patient in home. Instead of hospitalization or an outpatient program, staff members like social workers, psychiatrists, and counselors come directly to the patient’s house for treatment. ACT is used primarily for those with severe and persistent mental illness like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, some of whom also contend with substance abuse. ACT can be short- or long-term (months to years), and provides the same multidisciplinary, 24/7 staffing of a psychiatric unit, but in the comfort of the patient's own home and/or community.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.
