About this Facility

Summit Oaks Hospital provides behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment in Summit, New Jersey. Their services are designed to treat each condition individually or concurrently through their specialized treatment track for dual diagnosis.

Summit Oaks Hospital offers medically monitored detox, partial hospitalization treatment, intensive outpatient, and dual diagnosis treatment.

Summit Oaks Hospital provides a medically supervised detox program that incorporates various therapies throughout the detox for those who have the capacity to participate in them. Medical professionals will be monitoring vital signs and withdrawal symptoms to ensure the process is as comfortable as possible. The length of detox and the method used varies depending on what is best for each person.

Summit Oaks Hospital’s Partial Hospitalization Programs are an alternative to inpatient hospitalization. This program is offered to those in need of mental health treatment and to those who are struggling with substance use disorder. It is best suited for those who do not need to stay overnight in the hospital and who can manage at home on their own while not in treatment. The services include group therapy, educational groups, psychiatric care, skills training, psychoeducational classes, and aftercare planning. The program meets from 10 am – 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

The adult psychiatric intensive outpatient program at Summit Oaks Hospital is for people who need intensive therapy while honoring their commitments in their personal and professional life. Treatment for depression, anxiety, anger, chronic pain, mood disorders, impulsive behavior, and grief and loss will be incorporated. Medication management, group therapy, psychoeducation, and referrals upon discharge will be provided. This program meets Monday through Friday from 10 am to 1 pm.

Dual Diagnosis treatment is for those with acute psychiatric symptoms combined with substance use issues. Understanding and treating both issues is important to be able to regain stability and remain abstinent. This program allows for the treatment of the whole person by identifying the underlying causes of addiction and working to rebuild health mentally and emotionally.

Treatment

Alcoholism

Alcoholism (alcohol use disorder) is diagnosed when a person’s drinking causes harm or distress and they continue to drink anyway. Often, they have a physical as well as psychological dependence on the substance. To treat alcohol addiction, medical detox is often necessary to safely withdraw from alcohol. Once this is complete, alcohol rehab in New Jersey can provide skills and supports necessary for long-term recovery.

Drug Addiction

Drug rehab in New Jersey is the process of addressing the complex issues involved with addiction. Challenges are identified and addressed through individual and group counseling. Participants learn how to manage these issues without the use of substances.

Dual Diagnosis

New Jersey has a variety of dual-diagnosis addiction treatment programs, including inpatient and outpatient drug and alcohol rehabs, that recognize the unique needs of individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health conditions. These programs typically employ evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), trauma-focused therapy, and art therapy to successfully address co-occurring disorders and support sustained recovery.

Mental Health and Substance Abuse

New Jersey has a range of mental health and substance abuse treatment programs providing dual-diagnosis treatment. These rehabs provide effective treatment for co-occurring disorders, which typically involves an inpatient or outpatient program. Treatment often includes a mental health evaluation, individualized treatment plan, individual and group therapy, evidence-based interventions like cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychoeducation. When combined, these programs and therapeutic interventions can successfully address co-occurring disorders to improve mental health and well-being.

Opioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Level of Care

Outpatient

Outpatient rehabs enable clients to receive a full continuum of care while continuing to live at home. They’re often ideal for clients who are stepping down from inpatient care but some clients may prefer to transition into outpatient treatment immediately after completing detox. Many outpatient facilities also offer ambulatory medical detox for low-risk clients. Outpatient treatment generally includes psychotherapy and life skills training. Clients in opioid and/or alcohol recovery may also receive medication assisted treatment (MAT).

Medically Assisted Detox

If you feel out of control with your substance use, they can help. They can provide you with a safe detox that will ease your discomfort and assist you towards a healthier lifestyle. They provide a medically managed detox and supplement this with a range of therapies. This will be the start of learning new ways of coping and a new way of living

Intensive Outpatient

Clients who are exiting inpatient rehab, those who are experiencing crisis, and those who prefer to live at home while in treatment typically enroll in intensive inpatient programs (IOP). These programs feature frequent and robust care, generally requiring clients to participate in at least nine hours of care weekly, though many intensive outpatient rehabs offer up to 20 treatment hours per week. IOP services typically combine individual, group, and family counseling with recovery education and holistic therapies.

Inpatient

If you are experiencing acute mental health problems, feel in crisis and at risk, Summit Oaks Hospital provides a safe environment, with 24 hour clinical supervision to help and support you. Their adult inpatient programs are comprehensive, therapeutic and intensive. Your care at Summit Oaks is led by their team of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, masters-level clinicians, certified drug & alcohol and therapeutic counselors who will offer support for you each and everyday.

24-Hour Clinical Care

At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

12-Step

Participants in 12 step programs engage in a rigorous process of personal growth as a cornerstone of long-term recovery. They are expected to attend anonymous, peer-led 12 step meetings, which are free, open to the public, and available multiple times per day in most communities. Though these programs are rooted in spiritual principles, religious affiliation is not required. Self-selected peer sponsors mentor participants as they work through the 12 steps, learning forgiveness, understanding, acceptance, and accountability.

Aftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Clinical Services

Animal Therapy

Animal therapy (aka pet therapy or animal-assisted therapy) can be very healing, as it allows patients to bond with animals, who give unconditional love. This is particularly useful for those who suffered trauma by the hands of people, who may be able to trust and form closer attachments to animals than humans at certain stages of rehabilitation.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Patients are involved in journaling, poetry writing, watercolor painting, group murals, and other creative/art activities. Masters-level art therapists in their department, provide art therapy to our adolescents and adults. During the Music Expression/Songwriting Workshops, patients are guided in writing a song about their feelings, pertaining to recovery and wellness.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.
