Renewal Treatment in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a facility that helps adult men and women find recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Their multidisciplinary approach allows clients to integrate addiction recovery into every aspect of their lives to achieve long term sobriety. It's a residential facility with a casual atmosphere and modern amenities.
Renewall’s therapy and skill based treatment is geared towards preparing clients to return to their communities empowered and confident in their abilities. The licensed clinical staff relies on evidence backed modalities to create customized care plans.
Clients with severe symptoms qualify for the inpatient program, where they stay at a secure facility for their treatment. Residential treatment ensures they can access their care teams 24 hours a day. Clients share a living facility and are encouraged to socialize and support one another.
Clinicians provide care through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other modalities focused on recognizing thought distortions, destructive behaviors, and stressful triggers. In addition to individual and group therapy, clients receive interactive workbooks and journals to complete that help guide them through the recovery process. The core of Renewal Treatment’s philosophy is that behaviors are rooted in thought patterns, but thought patterns can be changed.
Clients with less severe symptoms are better suited for the outpatient program. This is a day program where clients come to the facility throughout the week to receive treatment and meet with their care team. Outpatient is beneficial for clients who are considered low risk and need less supervision from staff.
Exiting inpatient treatment can be difficult for those coming from traumatic backgrounds. The family support group helps clients and their families through mentor programs, housing, and parental education programs. These relationship focused services are offered through the Lydia’s House program, which provides a safe and low pressure atmosphere to rebuild and strengthen their relationships.

It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.
In recognition of the importance of incorporating family into the treatment process and the journey of recovery, programs provides the option for residents and their invited family members to participate in one or two family therapy sessions with an experienced counselor. Among the many benefits of family therapy, these sessions may help to improve communication and encourage healthier relationships between family members; they may also guide family members in their efforts to make the necessary changes that will help them to support their loved one’s ongoing recovery.
Group therapy sessions are conducted five days a week at Renewal Center of White Deer Run. Led by trained and experienced counselors, these sessions provide a structured and supportive forum for men to learn from the experiences of others, share their own insights, and practice the healthy interpersonal skills that will be essential to their continued successful recovery.
While in the program, New Directions of White Deer Run provides men with the opportunity to participate in two individual therapy sessions each week. These sessions, which are conducted by a counselor who has been trained in both Choice Theory and Reality Therapy, are an ideal environment in which men can process the successes, setbacks, and other experiences that have occurred during early recovery.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.
Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.
