Oxford House Kai is a sober living facility in Greenwood, Indiana. It is a seven bed facility that exclusively houses men who are in recovery and want a supportive sober environment to live in as they reintegrate into their lives. This is a residential private residential facility with modern amenities. Oxford Houses are democratically run, with residents voting to make significant decisions, including whether or not an applicant would make a good fit for the house. As a result, they are community orientated, and members have many responsibilities related to the running of the house.
A sober living facility like Oxford House Kai has strict rules prohibiting the presence and use of alcohol. They are safe places for those in recovery to reestablish themselves or remove themselves from regressive living situations. Clients living in such a facility pay their way and play an active role in maintaining and running the house.
The Oxford House program does not offer a drug rehab treatment program, but clients accepted into a residence join local AA or NA groups (Oxford House does not seek endorsement from these groups). Such groups reinforce clients’ personal responsibility and add structure to their day.
Clients independently attend meetings, and those living in one house aren’t required to attend the same meetings. However, it’s common for clients to host private meetings at home for residents.
The 12 step program utilized by AA and NA sees clients accept responsibility for their actions, accept that they are powerless over their addictions, and take strength in a self defined higher power. Throughout meetings, participants make amends with those hurt by their addictions (when possible/appropriate) and continue to support one another as they continue on the path of recovery.
Clients can stay at Oxford House Kai for as long as they like, so long as they are meeting their responsibilities to the house and other residents. This includes contributing financially so that the home is financially self-supporting. Such commitment helps clients live independently and gives them authority over house operations.
The responsibilities clients receive living at Oxford House Kai reflect those clients must accept when living independently. Accepting them in the group house offers experience and practice for the future.
