The Navy Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Service (SARP) is an alcohol and drug rehabilitation service of the Navy Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. SARP provides multiple levels of care for active duty men and women, their families, and retired service members. Treatment takes place in a clinical setting with modern amenities.
Sailors may apply for treatment or be referred to SARP by commanding officers. Staff assess to determine what level of care is appropriate for the client.
Clients with the most severe symptoms are referred to the five week inpatient program for intensive, 24 hour care and support. The SARP residential program has 38 beds. Clients may get referred to inpatient care if the assessment determines they lack support elsewhere.
The abstinence based program provides at least five hours of clinical service a week alongside education and therapy. Mental health providers guide clients through therapy programs designed to uncover the causes of addiction and cultivate the skills needed to avoid future use, including coping skills and symptom management. Care schedules follow a structured plan for more excellent stability.
PHP treatment is similar to the inpatient program, only clients do not live at the facility during the five week period. They are permitted to return home or two to a supportive environment if the assessment determines that the severity of their symptoms doesn’t warrant 24 hour monitoring and care. PHP clients meet for regularly scheduled meetings and treatment during the day.
IOP is another day program that meets three times weekly for six weeks. Individual IOP sessions are generally longer than those in other day programs but deliver the same types of treatment and care. SARP’s IOP is entirely virtual.
All levels of care provided by SARP can treat the co-occurring mental health issues often present alongside addiction. These conditions include depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder, among others.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.
Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.
Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.
In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.
