About this Facility

Harbor House offers inpatient treatment for individuals with alcohol and/or substance addiction. The program includes education, aftercare programs, individual counseling, 12-step methods and more. Harbor House is located at Byram, Mississippi.

Individuals admitted to Harbor House assume a great deal of responsibility for their care, treatment and personal growth. They are treated with respect and dignity and are provided with all available information so that they can make informed decisions about their care. Recovery begins when clients accept and that they have a problem and that they are powerless over this disease and that their lives are unmanageable. They must be willing to go to any length to achieve and maintain sobriety, be honest with themselves and others and be thorough in examining all areas of their life, including their relationships and patterns of living. Old ideas and behaviors need to be discarded. These will be replaced with new healthy skills and coping mechanisms.

Harbor House provides routine on-site physician and nursing services. All clients admitted to the Primary Care Residential Treatment Program undergo a comprehensive nursing assessment and medical evaluation by a licensed physician. The medical staff handles minor illnesses and injuries, dispenses medications, makes referrals for specialty medical, surgical and mental health services, assists clients in establishing relationships with community-based primary care medical and mental health providers, collects specimens for drug screens and helps to secure low cost and free medications through drug company programs.

Harbor House is licensed to conduct DUI (Driving Under the Influence) Diagnostic Assessment Services. This program is for individuals who have been convicted of two or more DUI violations and have had their driver’s license suspended. This program was developed and sanctioned under the Mississippi Implied Consent Law to encourage alcohol and drug treatment and to reduce the suspension period for offenders.

Treatment

Alcoholism

When a person has alcohol use disorder, often referred to as alcoholism, they build up a physical tolerance to alcohol, and they experience withdrawal if they stop drinking. Due to physical and psychological dependence, they may be unable to stop drinking on their own. Alcohol rehab in Mississippi can help. Treatment options include detox, cognitive behavioral therapy, mutual help groups, and pharmacological treatments.

Drug Addiction

For those seeking help with addiction, a drug rehab in Mississippi offers the necessary care to achieve long-term recovery. Options include inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and long-term drug rehab in Mississippi.

Opioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance Abuse

In Mississippi, substance abuse treatment is available in inpatient and outpatient rehabs. These facilities can treat a range of substance use disorders and even co-occurring mental health challenges, in dual-diagnosis treatment programs. These programs involve an assessment with an addiction expert, personalized treatment plan, and evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). By addressing the underlying issues contributing to addiction, you’ll leave treatment with the skills to sustain your recovery.

Level of Care

Medically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Inpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements. The first phase of recovery at Harbor House for individuals interested in overcoming addictive behaviors and lifestyles is the Primary Care Residential Program. Clients stay full-time at the main campus for six to eight weeks. The Program utilizes evidence based practices and a Twelve Step recovery model. There is a separate program for men and for women. The clinical staff develops a Recovery Plan for each client which is used as a guide to prioritize client goals and objectives and measure client progress. The Plan outlines a roadmap for the client to follow to become a productive member of society, improve relationships with families and friends, secure gainful employment and enhance their level of spirituality. The daily program includes individual counseling, small group discussions andHarbor House Services educational classes. Time is also allocated each day for clients to complete written assignments and household chores, interact with their peers on a one-on-one basis, engage in physical fitness activities and attend a Twelve Step recovery meeting. Arrangements are made with other agencies, organizations and providers if clients need services not available at Harbor House.

Sober Living Homes

If you or a loved one meets the following criteria, you may benefit from a sober living home in Mississippi: You don’t have a strong support system at home; you’ve recently completed rehab; you’ve relapsed in the past; you suffer from a co-occurring mental health disorder. A men’s or women’s sober living home can provide the structured support you need to develop recovery skills and prepare for more independent living.

12-Step

Participants in 12 step programs focus on the development of spiritual, psychological, and emotional skills to support sustained recovery. They regularly attend 12 step meetings, which are free, peer-directed, anonymous, open to the public, and accessible daily in most communities. Specialized formats are also widely available, including groups for seniors, teens, and families. Though these programs are rooted in the belief in a higher power, religious affiliation is not required.

Aftercare Support

Harbor House offers separate male and female Aftercare Programs. The Aftercare Program is voluntary (unless court ordered) and is available to all clients that complete the Primary Care Program. Primary Care clients can attend the Aftercare Program at the main campus after they have completed 30 days of treatment. The Program consists of weekly group meetings facilitated by a trained counselor. The Aftercare counselors monitor client progress, meet with clients on an as needed basis and make referrals to other agencies and organizations for additional services and support. The goal of the Aftercare Program is to provide ongoing peer-focused sobriety-oriented support for clients who want it. Some of the areas that are covered during this phase of treatment include helping clients to take active roles in making continuing recovery plans. Clients are expected to attend the weekly sessions and Twelve Step recovery meetings on a regular basis, abstain from drugs and alcohol and harmful behaviors, participate in the random drug screening program and have a strong relationship with a sponsor.

Clinical Services

Experiential Therapy

The purpose of the Ropes Course, which is also called adventure based counseling, is to challenge groups of individuals to work together as a team to overcome obstacles in an effort to reach their goals -- those set by the facilitator and those set by the participants themselves. As opposed to the typical “feelings groups,” in which residents sit around a circle and work through concerns verbally, this approach to group therapy places participants in a hands-on learning situation. The Course takes place over two days (4 hours each day).

The Family Program is available to all interested parties. It focuses on information and education about the disease of addiction and is held at the South Jackson campus on Thursday evenings (for a total of six sessions). The major goal of the Family Program is to provide families and friends with information and education that allows them to understand the disease of addiction and what they can do to begin the process of recovery. Families are affected by addiction in many ways and they suffer many consequences; their own recovery is essential for their welfare and for that of the client. Families in the Program can sign up for a formal family conference. The Family Program covers the same six-week curriculum as that of the educational program for clients. At the start of each session the topic for the evening is introduced, followed by a film, a brief lecture and a discussion circle that includes the clients whose families/friends are in attendance. The last fifteen minutes of the Program allow for clients and families to visit and continue their discussion together in small groups. The films provide information on the medical aspects of addiction, the stages of recovery, the signs and symptoms of relapse, spiritual advice on the dangers of enabling, behaviors associated with denial and client testimonials about relapses associated with cross addictions.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.
