East Bay Intergroup helps connect members of the community with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) 12 Step, community-based meetings for adults struggling with addiction. Some meetings are open to the public and others are closed and only available to AA members. Many meetings in the Oakland area are available in Spanish.
AA is a well-known, long-running national program with meetings around the country. The 12 Steps help members reach and maintain sobriety, and there are also 12 Traditions that govern how the organization runs. In the area covered by East Bay Intergroup, a variety of meetings are available, including newcomers, Big Book, women-only, discussion, and speaker.
AA members are those who have committed to stop drinking permanently, and they are supported by sponsors and the rest of the group. Members have the opportunity to participate in community service projects and receive recovery education, such as help with coping skills, accountability, self-care, communication, and spiritual focus.
East Bay Intergroup and Alcoholics Anonymous do not charge a fee, although AA groups often accept freewill offerings. Participants may be referred to other services that accept private insurance plans such as Humana, Beacon, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Cigna, and Magellan Health. Insurance plans vary, so be sure to check with your insurer about out-of-network benefits and other coverage information.

Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.
