Outpatient rehab programs provide flexibility and choice for clients who do not require intensive inpatient treatment. Clients remain in their own homes and may continue to work or attend schools while in active recovery. Outpatient treatment typically includes addiction counseling and continuing recovery education, including courses in self-care and relapse prevention. Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is available in many treatment centers for clients in opioid and/or alcohol recovery.

Persons who require high-level support but who do not wish to leave their homes or communities may enroll in an intensive outpatient program (IOP). Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
