Breaking Free is a nonprofit mental health and addiction recovery center located in Aurora, Illinois. They provide education, prevention, and counseling services that focus on recovering from alcohol and drug abuse while healing family relationships and providing mental health treatment.
Breaking Free’s addiction related services include medically assisted detox, intensive outpatient, outpatient, and aftercare. Family services and help with child abuse cases are also available.
Breaking Free’s medically assisted detox is governed by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs to help maintain safety and comfort as much as possible. Withdrawal management is essential in serious cases of addiction to ensure the drugs and alcohol are removed in a way that won’t cause unsafe reactions.
The intensive outpatient program is often an integral part of the continuum of care for people addicted to drugs and alcohol. Post detox, coming to treatment on a regular basis ensures continued recovery. The program offers a range of services, including counseling and therapy, medical treatment, and the monitoring of drugs and alcohol. Additional clinical or experiential therapies may be implemented into the program depending on the individual’s needs.
Like intensive outpatient, participants in the outpatient program will remain living at home while undergoing treatment for their addiction. Therapy sessions, group therapy, and continued monitoring of alcohol and drugs are commonplace. Each individual case will be considered for the time commitment needed to participate in this program.
Upon completing treatment, aftercare support becomes a positive way to maintain sobriety and continue recovery. Before graduating from Breaking Free’s programs, time is spent creating an aftercare plan. This helps maintain a level of continued effort and routine once returning home. If needed, help to find a sober living arrangement is commonplace. Meetings such as SMART or the 12 Steps are often considered a positive way to maintain a sense of connection and ongoing support.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.
Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.
In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.
Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.
