About this Facility

Akua Mind and Body, located in Newport Beach, California, offers partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) for adults in need of alcohol and drug rehab. Services include dual-diagnosis treatment, medication-assisted therapy (MAT), a variety of holistic treatment options, Native American treatment modalities, and aftercare support.

MAT can help those struggling with opioid or alcohol misuse manage cravings and reduce the chance of relapse. The process involves using FDA-approved medication over a longer term, along with evidence-based rehab treatment, to establish sobriety and new habits.

A PHP is a full-time day program, and an IOP at Akua Mind and Body involves nine hours of treatment per week. Both programs include individual, group, and family therapy; medication management; MAT; recovery education; and relapse prevention. Approaches include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and a wide range of holistic treatment options.

Holistic treatment options at Akua Mind and Body include art therapy, music therapy with a harp, mindfulness, fitness, yoga, meditation, and Reiki. They also offer native healing and traditions, such as traditional native practices, Wellbriety meetings, Medicine Wheel techniques, Generation Red Road teachings, and Talking Circles/Sweat Lodge.

Akua Mind and Body is in-network with a variety of insurance plans, including Beacon, United Healthcare, Molina Healthcare, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Multiplan, Humana, Aetna, and First Health Network. Every insurance plan is different, so be sure to verify coverage details and out-of-network benefits directly with your insurer.

Treatment

Alcoholism

Alcoholism, or alcohol use disorder (AUD), is defined by alcohol dependence. This is a state the body reaches when it experiences withdrawal symptoms in the absence of alcohol. A person who has AUD craves alcohol and continues to drink despite adverse consequences. Because withdrawing from alcohol can pose health risks, individuals with AUD should seek professional alcohol rehab in California to overcome their alcohol addiction. This process typically involves medical detox, rehabilitation, and maintenance.

Drug Addiction

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Dual Diagnosis

In California, dual-diagnosis addiction treatment programs offer comprehensive care for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Programs include medically assisted detox, intensive outpatient, outpatient, residential rehab, and partial hospitalization. Using an evidence-based approach, clinicians utilize therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy, or dialectical behavioral therapy and mindfulness to address substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health challenges. Additional services include 12-Step recovery, group therapy, family counseling, and relapse prevention to promote sustained recovery.

Mental Health and Substance Abuse

California drug and alcohol rehabs also provide dual-diagnosis treatment for individuals seeking help for both mental health and substance abuse. These programs are usually offered on an inpatient or outpatient basis. You can usually expect a mental health assessment and personalized treatment plan, evidence-based therapies, like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), experiential therapies like equine therapy, skills groups, and counseling to simultaneously address both mental health and substance abuse and drastically increase your chances of long-term sobriety.

Opioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Level of Care

Outpatient

Clients receiving treatment at an outpatient rehab typically do not require hospitalization or intensive supervision and support. Outpatient addiction counseling and recovery education are often offered during the morning, evening, night, and weekend, allowing clients to tailor treatment to their own schedule. Partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs are the most time-intensive and are designed for clients who are at an increased relapse risk and/or who need more robust therapeutic support.

Inpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements. Akua Mind & Body Gender-Specific Residential treatment program’s focus on a long lasting sobriety and mindfulness based relapse intervention. We have seen great success in developing this innovative method of treatment which accelerates the process of breaking destructive patterns created by drugs and alcohol in the patient's life. To accomplish this, they combine the science of substance use disorder services, nutrition, movement, and psychotherapy with Eastern techniques of Acupuncture, Massage, Yoga, and Meditation to achieve a full comprehensive and individualized program.

Intensive Outpatient

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) support clients’ sustained sobriety as they exit detox or step down from inpatient programs. They are also designed for clients who are at an elevated risk of relapse. Intensive outpatient treatment typically requires clients to engage in a minimum of nine hours of therapy per week, but clients may receive up to 20 therapeutic hours weekly. IOP treatment modalities often combine psychotherapy, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).

Medically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Clinical Services

Couples Therapy

Interpersonal relationships with spouses, partners, close friends and family, can often be a primary trigger for many individuals struggling with dependence on substances. While these relationships can often be a source of support for an individual in recovery, it is important to examine how these interactions can be unhealthy or holding one back from positive growth. It can also be a source of stress and anxiety, which often contributes to substance abuse. At AKUA, we provide one hour-long weekly group focused on relationships and family systems, which helps clients explore how their current behavior may be influenced by their family of origin. Clients will receive weekly meetings with a therapist to process any issues involving relationships or family. Clients will also have the opportunity to participate in couples and family therapy if it is clinically appropriate for their recovery.

Exposure to traumatic experiences, especially those occurring in childhood, has been strongly linked to substance use disorders. Studies suggest that early traumatic experiences may increase risk of substance use disorders because of attempts to self-medicate mood symptoms associated with a maladaptive biological stress response. At AKUA, clients will receive two one-hour groups weekly with a highly-trained trauma specialist, in which they will learn about how trauma affects the psyche. Clients will learn how to identify and manage symptoms related to traumatic experience, rather that turning to drugs and alcohol.

At AKUA, they are committed to creating a strong alliance between therapist and client to promote healing and growth of the mind, body, and spirit. Clients will receive one 50-minute session weekly with a registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern to process individual issues. AKUA’s therapists utilize a holistic, non-judgmental approach that honors each individual’s unique strengths and potential for growth. They are trained in the psychodynamic approach, which is highly effective for examining the underlying causes of substance abuse. The goals of psychodynamic therapy are to increase the client’s self-awareness and understanding of the influence of the past on present behavior. A psychodynamic approach enables the client to examine unresolved conflicts and symptoms that arise from past dysfunctional relationships and manifest themselves in the need and desire to abuse substances.

Most people can maintain sobriety while in treatment, but the real challenge is transitioning back into the real world. At AKUA, we focus on life skills that will empower clients to make healthy decisions for their new sober life. Clients will participate in weekly groups focusing on problem solving, self-awareness, effective communication, assertiveness, resilience, coping with stress, and building self-esteem. Clients will also receive support with resume building, job or school applications, interview skills, job search, and placement with volunteer opportunities. AKUA encourages clients to discover (or rediscover) their passion, and assists them in identifying attainable goals for the future. This can give clients a sense of purpose, empowerment, and motivation, which is essential for a healthy and fulfilling life in recovery.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.
