About this Facility

Advocate Lutheran General Hospital offers a full range of behavioral disorder treatments through its Behavioral Health Services unit, including drug and alcohol addiction, in Park Ridge, Illinois. The private clinical setting is staffed by licensed and certified medical professionals who treat all age groups. They are equipped with state of the art amenities.

Advocate takes a multidisciplinary approach to mental health care that allows them to care for clients in all stages of addiction.

Inpatient treatment provides long term care for clients who exhibit severe symptoms and need 24 hour care and supervision. Clients live on campus for the duration of their treatment, with ongoing access to medical staff and services. Treatment is rooted in therapeutic programs administered by specialists.

Therapy aims to pave the way for long term stabilization by teaching healthy coping and life skills. Methods include group and individual psychotherapy, occupational therapy, goal setting, education and skill building groups, and medication education and management. Clients work with their personal care team to craft the care plan that makes up their daily schedule, ensuring that it meets their recovery needs.

Clients whose symptoms aren’t severe may be referred to the PHP day program if they are stable enough not to need 24 hour supervision. Clients visit the facility for a few hours a day to receive treatment from their care team. Clients reside at home and continue working during treatment.

The PHP program provides the same treatment methods as other programs through a flexible schedule.

IOP is another daycare treatment option similar to PHP. However, unlike PHP, specialized care is more intensive, often delivered more frequently and for longer sessions. It’s ideal for clients whose symptoms aren’t severe enough to warrant inpatient, and it may be used as a transitional step for those leaving an inpatient program.

Treatment

Dual Diagnosis

Dual-diagnosis addiction treatment in Illinois focuses on integrated care for individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health conditions. These specialized rehab programs include detox, medication-assisted treatment, residential drug and alcohol rehab, and outpatient programs. Treatment incorporates a combination of trauma-informed and evidence-based therapies — like cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and motivational interviewing— support groups, and skills training to holistically address addiction and co-occurring disorders at the same time, enhancing your mental, physical, and emotional health.

Mental Health

Drug rehabs often provide treatment for people seeking help for both mental health and substance abuse. The programs are usually offered on an inpatient or outpatient basis. Each personalized treatment plan includes a number of different mental health therapies and services, like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), experiential therapies (equine and animal therapy, outdoor therapy groups, and individual / group counseling sessions designed to simultaneously address both mental health and substance abuse. Standard treatment modalities include relapse prevention education and emotional coping skills training.

Level of Care

Outpatient

Clients in outpatient rehab receive a variety of services based on their unique and evolving needs. Typical outpatient treatment modalities include individual, group, and family counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, and community reintegration support. Many programs also provide medication assisted treatment (MAT) for clients recovering from alcohol and/or opioid dependency. Clients exiting inpatient treatment or those who are at an elevated risk of relapse may engage in more robust treatment, such as intensive outpatient (IOP) programming.

Inpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.
