When addiction is present, a mental health disorder is usually present as well, which is known as dual diagnosis. Within addiction treatment facilities, it’s extremely common to find instances of dual diagnosis. Treatment facilities tend to offer 24-hour access to medical and mental health staff, plus treatments that include individual and group counseling, addiction and relapse prevention education, and coping skills training. Family therapy and relationship counseling are often available as well.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.
